1810 (Jul 2) entire from Berbice, British Guiana, to Scotland with very fine strike of the “Ship Letter / (crown) / HASTINGS” oval hs in black (Robertson S2), rated 1/, 1/5 and 1/8, London backstamp and Edinburgh transit below, with contents regarding the healthy state of all the inhabitants, favourable weather conditions for growing cotton, the imprisonment of Sir Francis Burdett and the appointment of a new Governor, a very fine example and the latest recorded date of use of this Ship Letter handstamp, previously only known between 1800 and 1804; ex “Martlet”.
