1840 stampless letter sent to Wohlen, Switzerland with ‘’1/2’’ in manuscript and ‘’Paid 6 MY 1840’’ circular strike in red on front, ‘’London 6 May 1840 F.B.O.’’ Foreign Branch Office circular datestamp on reverse. Sent via Calais and Huninigue, handstamped ‘’A-T-F’’ (Affr. Taxe Frontiere) and, in manuscript, ‘’28’’ and ‘’34’’. A very fine and important cover, posted as it was on the same day as the introduction of postage stamps; cert. Holcombe (1997); ex “Mayflower”.
