1838 (18.9) Folded entire written from Lima, Peru to Canton, China, the 1 1/2 page letter from Edwin Bartlett in Lima to S. Wetmore in Canton who received it 26 Dec. 1838. Letter refers to defection of General Orbegoso and the capture of Lima by Chilean forces…foresees years of anarchy in Peru.. His Business made only $3000 in Peru to China from 1830s. An important historic letter about Chile-Peru war of Confederation.
The letter was sent privately from Lima to Canton as there was no regular sailings to China via Pacific. Well known Peruvian philatelist, (H. Marquez) is of the opinion that the letter was sent by private ships via Panama to Europe to Turkey and from their “Silk Route” on land via Central Asia on to China to Canton, however, this can’t be proven, an outstanding historical item
