Description
1869 Unpaid letter from Liverpool (Sept. 11/23, 1869) to Patras (Sept. 20/Oct.2, 1869) via London (Sept. 12/24, 1869), “cachet d’entrée” at Calais (Sept. 12/24, 1869), “cachet ambulant” from Lyon to Avignon (Sept. 25/Oct. 7, 1869) and Athens (Sept. 18/30, 1869). “Via Marseilles & Le Pirée” handwritten on the top of the cover, (“Voie Française”). Taxed at the arrival at 220 lepta, written on red pencil, corresponding to the rate for an unpaid letter from 7½ to 15 grams according to the convention between Greece and France of Nov. 1866. The stamps are from the consecutive Athens (1862/1867) & “cleaned plates” printings (1868/1869) and have good to large margins, 2 are touched at a corner. Ex Zachariadès collection.
