Description
1863 Unpaid letter from Marseille (Oct. 25/Nov. 7, 1863) to Patras (3/15 Nov. 1863) via Pireas (Nov. 1/13, 1863) and Athens (Nov. 1/13, 1863) transported by the boat “Carmel” of “Ligne du Levant” of the French “Compagnie des Paquebots de la Méditerranée” (black maritime postmark dated Nov.7, 1862 on the top-middle). Taxed at the arrival at 132 lepta (written on red pencil) corresponding to 112 lepta, or 1 franc, (single rate) for the transportation by the boats of the “Compagnie des Paquebots de la Méditerranée” for a letter up to 7½ grams plus the Greek domestic rate of 20 lepta for a letter up to 15 grams (single rate) according to the 1838 convention between Greece & France up to Oct. 1867. Black handwritten “Voie du Pyrée” on top-left. The stamps are from the first Athens printings (1861/1862) for the 2 lepta and from the consecutive Athens printings for the 10, 40 & 80 lepta (1862/1867). All the stamps have good to large margins except the 80 lepta, touched at one corner. Cert. Holcombe.
