1898 (Aug 10) BEA 1a postal stationery card datelined “Uganda Railway, B. E. Africa – Kibweze” from a British railway official to Sukkur, India, sent via the tented temporary Post Office with the 1a die cancelled by “RAILHEAD / MOMBASA” squared circle ds, with Bombay and Sukkur datestamps below, some creasing and soiling, a very scarce usage on the Uganda Railway; ex Rossiter.
Note: An extract from the official government “Report on the state of British East Africa Protectorate for 1897-98” reads as follows: “The Uganda Railway has practically reached Kibwezi. Up Country Mails: Mail runners are now sent from Machakos to Kibwezi, where they receive the mails from the coast men who come up by train to Railhead. The Machakos runners, after exchanging mails, return there. Fresh runners take on the up-country mails from Machakos to Kikuyu…”
