This letter was sent unpaid and shows a black datestamp MADISON/JUL/16/1857/Ind., a black “24”, the charge in cents to be collected, a New York Exchange Office ds 5/JUL22/N.YORK Br PKT, the 5 cents being the inland postage due to the US Post Office and the crisp clear strike of the unframed circular all in one AMERICAN MAIL / AU.3 / 1857 / 1/- Dublin charge applied alongside, backflap missing, an important and rare example of the American Mail one shilling hs.
