Envelope from Rome to Milford, prepaying the 32 baj rate (1858 French-Papal Convention) with 1852 8b in two pairs, tied by grids and “Roma” cds. red French transit, red “3” French credit tying one pair, octagonal “Br. Service” hs and “PORTLAND ME/PAID15” cds in red confirming that the internal 15c was prepaid; a very scarce mail from the Papal States showing the exchange marking of Portland (no similar item was included in the Richard F. Winter collection); carried by the Allan Line “Bohemian”.
