Description

Meath – Clonard: 1761 (24.1) Folded entire sent from Quaker Missionary Ruth Follows in Edenderry writing to her basket weaving husband George in Castle Donington, Leicestershire, showing clear strike of the linear CLONARD in black, arrival ds on reverse, fine and scarce

Note: Ruth Follows travelled extensively throughout Great Britain as an itinerant Quaker Missionary, often leaving her children in the care of her always supportive husband and writing long and affectionate letters home. She usually travelled with younger women ministers who derived much support from her company. In 1761-62 and again in 1782-83, she visited Ireland and was particularly troubled by what she saw as Friends’ excessive worldliness there.
