Cork – Castletownroche: 1854 (24.7) Folded entire sent from Varna during the Crimean War via Marseille, Mallow, to Cork, departure POST OFFICE/BRITISH ARMY/JY.24.1854 cds, with a variety of Irish mkgs including red MALLOW and CORK cds, diamond numeral of the Cork “156”, plus the following linear mkgs CLOUNTHANE two strikes in black, plus blue mkgs of ROCKMILLS and CASTLETOWNROCHE (deleted), contents of letter refers to the arrival of Rear-admiral Edward Boxer to the Crimea, very fine, attractive and full of character.
Note: In December 1854, Edward Boxer was appointed second in command in the Mediterranean, and undertook the duties of superintendent at Balaklava in the Crimean War. This involved responsibility for inadequate harbour facilities that were heavily used. Boxer died of cholera on board the Jason, just outside the harbour, on 4 June 1855.
