Description

The Six pence value

Since red had been adopted for the 1d., doubly fugitive purple was now available for the 6d. a value widely used for fiscal purposes. it is Possible that the 1d. colour trials of Sept. 4th reflect this. The old colour was purple on red.

1901 stamp sized die proof on glazed card with uncleared surround, possibly unfinished; scarce. Ex “Maximus” (S.G. Auctions 1970).

Although somewhat rubbed, the thinness of the engraving suggests that work was still in progress.

Additional scans and images are being uploaded on a continuous basis.
