Lot 41313 – 1874 6d bright ultramarine on Registered cover to Cape Town tied very fine strike of the target type numeral “14”
1874 6d bright ultramarine on Registered cover to Cape Town tied very fine strike of the target type numeral “14” cancel of Pilgrim’s Rest. Alongside we note full handstamped “Gerregistreed/ZAR No” with “224” in manuscript and “Cape Town DE 3 74” arrival strike, reduced at left with some backflap faults and damage to upper left side, address improved, an important and very scarce cover (which also serves to demonstrate that in 1874, Pilgrim’s Rest lacked a date stamp), and the earliest recorded use of a target type numeral.
Additional scans and images are being uploaded on a continuous basis, and the complete set of illustrations for all lots will be available by 1 June 2026.
