Description
1855 (May 25) cover from the “Miss Sleigh, Tunbridge Wells” correspondence endorsed ‘Via Marseilles’, franked by 1855 1d red-brown, Die II, Alphabet II, wmk. Large Crown, lettered CB, used in combination with 1841 2d blue pl.4 lettered QK, small natural paper flaw on ‘A’ of ‘Postage’, cancelled by bold strike of the “OXO” obliterator in greenish-blue. Reverse with “POST OFFICE / BRITISH ARMY” datestamp in red (May 25) which used in Constantinople, Turkey, London cds (June 7) and ‘Tunbridge Wells’ arrival cds of the same day in green. An extremely rare combination usage and a most attractive cover. The existing pendant cover from the “Miss Sleigh” correspondence with the 2d neighbour stamp lettered QL was posted four days earlier on 21 May 1855. The imperforate 2d blue is very rare used during the Crimean War. SG Z16 = £2000 for a stamp off cover. Cert Karl-Albert Louis BPP (2022); ex Seymour, Glassco and Christies 13 March 1990 lot 1951.
