Envelope with contents sent from Montreal, 22 September 1851, carried by Cunard “Niagara” from New York 24 September via Liverpool to Cox & Co., London, 7 October. Red oblique PAID and manuscript 1/2 stg. or 1/4 cy. for postage to London. Forwarded onward via P.O. “Carado” to Malta, “Medusa” to Alexandria, and “Ajdaha” to Bombay, rated 2/3 stg. to India under the closed mail tariff of 1 June 1843, arriving in Bombay 6 November 1851, and forwarded to Bellary (10 November). Charged 8 as inland rate on arrival. A direct route would have been less expensive.
