Stampless envelope from Montreal, 27 March 1857, bearing MONTREAL L.C. MR 27 1857 circular datestamp. Carried by Allan “North American” via Portland, arriving Liverpool 11 April, then Paris 12 April. Sent unpaid, with GB 2F40C marque d’échange (Salles No. 3041) applied in France. Under the Anglo-French postal convention of 1 January 1857 (Article 35), England was charged 2.40 Fr. for 30 gr., and the French debit consisted of 6d. (6 Decimes) plus 4 Decimes French postage = 10 Decimes total.
