HAMBURG: 1852–57 3d. Orange-Red Multiple Franking via Collins Line

Single, vertical pair, and strip of three 3d orange-red on thin wove paper, touched to very large uneven margins, tied by concentric circles on entire letter from Montreal 14/9/1854, endorsed “Per Steamer Baltic”. Carried by Collins Line from New York via Liverpool (27/9) to London, then forwarded to Hamburg (30/9) with red oval P. of Hamburg on front.

Rate Interpretation: 6d. to the USA.12d. to cover the 21¢ US-packet rate to Hamburg. Red “4” likely denotes the US credit for sea postage.
