Wrapper with FREIBURG MAR 19 1852 manuscript in circle at top left, carried via Montreal (25/3) and Cunard “Niagara” to London (14/4), then forwarded to Kulsheim, Baden with oval PD handstamp. Sender: Gabriel Vogel, farmer, born 1814 in Kulsheim. The Freiburg post office had been operational since 1851. Some cover imperfections and soiling.
Postal Rate: Via France: 2s.7½d cy. for ¼ oz., 3s cy. for ½ oz. For Wurttemberg: 3s.2d cy. for ½ oz. Total rating on this letter: 2s.10d or 3s.2d cy., reflecting French routing.
Note: Letters to Baden were commonly routed via France, although Belgium was an alternative route. This cover illustrates early Canadian transatlantic mail to German states.
