Description

1852–57 6d Slate-Grey Horizontal Pair – Overpaid Brooksbank Cover via Allan “Nova Scotian”

6d slate-grey on medium wove paper, horizontal pair, with good to huge margins showing portions of adjoining stamps at left and right, tied by indistinct “1” numeral on envelope (missing left sideflap) from Barrie, 23 May 1859. Carried by the Allan Line steamer “Nova Scotian” from Quebec via Liverpool, bearing red “LONDON PAID JU 9 59” datestamp. From the well-known Brooksbank correspondence.

Postal Note: Although there was sufficient time to catch the earlier Cunard “Persia” via Quebec, the letter was instead routed by the Allan Line. Covers from the Brooksbank correspondence are characteristically overpaid, likely due to the unavailability of 10d stamps in Barrie. This cover shows an overpayment of 4½d.

Note: Illustrated in Arfken.

Provenance: Guildford, Wilkinson

Expertise: B.P.A. (1994)
