Envelope from Quebec L.C., PAID AP 9 1855, bearing red “Sd Stg. Paid 10d Cy.” handstamp, carried on Cunard “Asia” via Boston and Liverpool 22/4 to Dublin, Ireland.
Note: With the outbreak of the Crimean War in March 1854, the British requisitioned many Cunard steamers for military transport. From January 1855 to January 1856, Cunard sailed fortnightly only to Halifax and Boston, while the US Collins Line handled the New York sailings. The transatlantic rate at this time was 1s 4d Canadian currency.
