Description

1851 Transatlantic Cover – 3d Red and Two 6d Brown-Purple (Laid Paper)

Envelope from Montreal, 20 June 1852, with contents dated 13 June from Quebec, franked with 3d red and two 6d brown-purple on laid paper, all with good to large margins, tied by concentric circles, carried on the Cunard “America” via Boston 23 June, reaching Liverpool, then Chester 5 July (backstamp), and finally Carnarvon, Wales, 6 July (backstamp).

Significance: The only known cover bearing Nos. 1 & 2 of Canada, and the second-earliest recorded franked Canadian transatlantic cover.
