1852–57 3d Brown-Red on Thin Wove – Vertical Pair on Money Letter to USA
Vertical pair of 3d brown-red on thin wove oily paper, Fourth Order (31 August 1853), with good to very large margins, tied by concentric circles on wrapper (missing left sideflap) from Toronto, U.C., 21 February 1854. The cover bears red PAID, “MONEY-LETTER”, and “CANADA” in ribbon handstamps, addressed to New York, USA.
The United States did not have a money letter system; registration in Canada eventually replaced it. According to Wayne Smith, only ten money letters to the USA with two 3d stamps on wove paper are recorded.
