1856 Toronto to Sackets Harbor, NY – Canada Paid Cover
Envelope from Toronto, bearing red TORONTO C.W. PAID MAY 12 1856 circular datestamp, with straight-line “CANADA PAID 10 Cts”, routed via Kingston to Sackets Harbor, New York. Missing portion of backflap.
Note: The prepaid Canadian rate of 10 cents covered the postage to the United States. The cover exemplifies mid-19th century cross-border mail and the use of Canadian postmarks and handstamps for U.S.-bound mail.
