Envelope with contents from Montreal, bearing red MONTREAL CANADA PAID MR 11 1856 circular datestamp, prepaid 6d.cy., and charged to Drawer 14, addressed to Bryant’s Pond, Maine, with red straight-line “By Grand Trunk Railway” route instruction.
Note: The cover was carried by the Grand Trunk Railway from Montreal to Bryant’s Pond. This railway connected Sarnia on Lake Huron to Rivière-du-Loup on the St. Lawrence and Portland on the Atlantic, completed by 1859. Montreal was linked to Portland as early as July 1853, facilitating faster mail transit between Canada and the northeastern United States.
