Lot 50101 – 1854 Stampless Cover – Windsor, U.C. to Detroit, Michigan
1854 Stampless Cover – Windsor, U.C. to Detroit, Michigan
Entire letter with red WINDSOR U.C., AU 4 1854 circular datestamp, struck with an oval “CANADA 10 CENTS” handstamp, supposedly applied at Windsor, addressed to Detroit, Michigan. Initially taxed 10 cents, the letter was later re-rated according to the Canada–U.S. border agreement valid from 21 June 1851.
A fine example of early cross-border mail, showing the implementation of the Canada–U.S. postal convention for letters sent between adjacent border offices.
Note: Illustrated in The Canadian Philatelist, 9–10/2002.
Provenance: Wilkinson.
