Description

1854 Stampless Cover – Woodstock to Cherry Valley, Illinois via Windsor

Stampless envelope from Woodstock, U.C., 23 July 1854, bearing a circular datestamp with “6D” in circle and an oval “CANADA 10 CENTS” handstamp, routed via London and Windsor to Cherry Valley, Illinois. The oval rate handstamp is believed to have originated in Windsor.

A fine example of mid-19th century cross-border mail, showing the application of the Canadian 10-cent U.S. postage rate and the use of local handstamps for U.S. destinations.

Note: Illustrated in Montgomery.

Provenance: Sanderson.
