Description

1851 Double-Weight Money Letter – London U.C. “PAID” / “MONEY LETTER”

Double-weight wrapper addressed to Vittoria, via Brantford and Simcoe (both backstamped), bearing red LONDON U.C., APR 15 1851 circular datestamp, with red “PAID” and “MONEY LETTER” handstamps, endorsed “Paid”, with arrival backstamp. Very fine; the only recorded money letter from the Pence period before stamp issuance.

Provenance: Wilkinson

Note: Before the introduction of registration in Canada, a system of money letters was used. Letters carrying money received special markings on the letter bills, and a receipt was required upon delivery. No other protection existed, and the system operated during the first four years of the Pence period. There was no charge for money letters.
