COBOURG: 1851 6d Slate-Violet on Laid Paper Cover to USA

Cover with 6d slate-violet on laid paper, good to large margins, cancelled by COBOURG, MY 8 1854, U.C. circular datestamp, bearing black framed curved CANADA handstamp, addressed to Point Harmar, Washington County, Ohio.

Pays the 6d U.S. letter rate, valid from 1 July 1851.

Note: The stamp may be on thin wove, almost pelure paper, with laid lines barely visible, as discussed in Arfken, p. 47. Illustrated in the Capex 1951 Exhibition Catalogue.
