Description

1858–59 ½d Deep Rose Perforated on Local Drop Letter

½d deep rose, perforated, tied by TORONTO, MAY 60 split ring on a local mourning drop letter, very fine.

Expertise: Cert. B.P.A. (1959)

Note: Drop letters were deposited at a post office for delivery within that office or by its letter carrier. A letter from W.H. Griffin, Secretary, dated 17 April 1851, gave the rate as ½d per ½ oz. This was subsequently clarified by Postmaster General J. Morris, confirming the rate applied to all letters, including those over ½ oz.

Additional scans and images are being uploaded on a continuous basis.
