Limerick Ship Letter – 1827 (April 18) Entire letter from Montevideo, Uruguay to London, landed on the west coast of Ireland and bearing on the face a fine strike of the fancy scroll “SHIP LETTER” handstamp of Limerick in red, with matching LIMERICK / SE.11.1827 / 94 mileage circular datestamp, also in red, alongside.
Rated “3/2” (later amended to “3/8”) for a double rate letter — comprising 6d Ship Letter, 14d mileage, and 2d packet charges, doubled. Reverse with transit and London arrival backstamps.A great rarity of maritime postal history, being the only recorded example of the Limerick Scroll “Ship Letter” marking. Provenance: T. E.
