Lot 60345 – 1867-77 Jammu & Kashmir – Rectangular Issues: Specialized

1867-77 Rectangular Issues, an exceptional and highly specialized collection of the Jammu & Kashmir Rectangular issues, comprising 26 covers (including several ex Masson), together with a select group of stamps and a complete sheet, offering outstanding depth and exhibition potential.

The collection is highlighted by a foreign letter from Srinagar to Amritsar, bearing a 1 anna black from the composite plate, alongside a 1 anna British-Indian adhesive, representing the double letter rate (over 14 tolas). The Kashmir stamp is cancelled by the red Srinagar seal, while the British-Indian stamp is struck with the rare U/26 obliterator of Sialkot (in use 1866–1868). The reverse shows Sialkot transit markings (1 and 2 January 1867), an Amritsar arrival (3 January 1867), and a “TOO LATE” marking in black. This cover represents the earliest recorded usage of the 1 anna black from the composite plate.

Also included is a rare complete sheet of the ½ anna composite plate, printed in blue (shades) watercolour on native paper, notably omitting the 1 anna value from the bottom row.

A further foreign letter from Srinagar to Lahore is franked with ½ anna bright blue, sent without British-Indian adhesives and bearing a postage due marking. The stamp is cancelled by the first obliterator of the British Post Office in Srinagar (“POST OFFICE CASHMERE”), recorded in use from 1867 to 1870. Transit markings include Murree and Amritsar (19 July 1870), with arrival at Lahore (19 July 1870).

Another notable item is a foreign letter bearing ½ anna ultramarine, cancelled by the black Srinagar seal, dated 22 February 1878, with a postage due marking of 1 anna and Sialkot transit marking on the reverse (ex Masson).

A rare and comprehensive assembly, combining important postal history, key early usages, and significant multiples. Condition generally very fine, and ideally suited for advanced study or exhibition. (SG £4000+)
