Description

1867 ½ Anna Black, First Composite Plate, Watercolour on Native Paper – Earliest Recorded Usage. A highly important example of the 1½ anna black, printed in watercolour on native paper from the first composite plate of the Old Rectangular issues of Kashmir. These issues were produced using watercolour inks, necessitated by the dry climatic conditions of the region, which were unsuitable for oil-based printing. The Kashmir printings can be distinguished from those of Jammu by the Dogri inscription within the inner oval, as well as the layout and dividing lines between subjects on the plate. The first composite plate consisted of 25 subjects, arranged in four rows of ½ anna values with a bottom row of 1 anna, reflecting the hybrid nature of early production. The earliest previously recorded dated example of the 1½ anna value is 1 April 1867, and only four covers bearing this first plate stamp are recorded (Nanjee). The present example is of exceptional significance, comprising an internal letter dated 21 Ramadan 1283 (Hijri calendar), corresponding to 28 January 1867, thereby establishing the earliest known usage of this issue. The stamp is tied by a clear red Srinagar seal cancellation, preserving its postal authenticity. Accompanied by a Holcombe certificate. A major rarity and key exhibition item, of the highest importance in the philately of Jammu & Kashmir. Very rare and fine (SG £1200)
