1877-78 A fascinating and specialized group of the so-called “missing dies” reprints, produced in 1877–78 to meet strong demand from stamp dealers for used examples of the popular Jammu circular issues. To facilitate this, three new dies were prepared, replicating the original designs of the ½ anna, 1 anna, and 4 annas values. These reprints can be distinguished from the originals by several key characteristics: the impressions are notably clearer and more sharply defined than the earlier oil-colour printings, and they are typically found on thinner, more smoothly surfaced paper. The group includes a wide range of printings and paper types: ½ anna, 1 anna, and 4 annas in red, on European laid paper; ½ anna red and 4 annas orange-red, on European laid paper with watermark; ½ anna, 1 anna, and 4 annas in black, on smooth European paper; ½ anna yellowish-brown, 1 anna greyish-black, and 4 annas black, on yellowish laid paper. Of particular note is an example of the ½ anna bearing a native cancellation of Manovar, adding further interest and postal character to the group. A comprehensive and instructive assembly, illustrating the transition from original issues to later reprints, and offering valuable material for the specialist collector.
