Lot 60334 – 1866-68 An instructive pair of foreign letters from
1866-68 An instructive pair of foreign letters from Jammu to British India, illustrating cross-border postal arrangements and the application of British-Indian postage. The first cover, dated 12 October 1866, is franked with ½ anna and addressed to Pind Dadan Khan, routed via Sialkot (13 Oct. 1866) and Jhelum (14 Oct. 1866). Upon entry into the British-Indian postal system, a ½ anna adhesive was applied and cancelled with the U-26 obliterator of Sialkot, recorded in use between 1866 and 1868. The second cover, dated 24 September 1866, is addressed to Amritsar and bears a 1 anna black of Jammu & Kashmir. Transit markings include Sialkot (25 Sept.) in red, with arrival at Amritsar (26 Sept.). The required British-Indian postage, in the form of two ½ anna adhesives, is cancelled with the scarce large diamond obliterator of the Sialkot Post Office. A scarce and highly informative duo, demonstrating postal rates, routing, and the interplay between Jammu & Kashmir and British-Indian postal systems during this period. Fair to fine condition (SG £7500+).
