Description
1800s, Early Stampless attractive group of four early stampless covers, offering valuable insight into pre-adhesive postal routes and markings. Highlights include: 1802 (3 September) entire letter from Calcutta to Worcester, bearing on reverse a very fine strike of the large oval “BENGAL / G.P.O. / POST PAID” datestamp in black, and on the face a clear “SHIP LETTER / Crown / LONDON” transit datestamp of 28 March 1803 — a fine and early overseas cover. A further entire from Madras to Marseille, showing a crescent “INDIA PAID” marking, illustrating continental routing. A fine and instructive group, ideal for the study of early Indian postal history and maritime mail routes. Condition generally fine. Auction
