Description

Gupta Empire, Kumaragupta I, c. 415-455, AV dinar, 7.34 g. (17 mm). Obverse: ‘archer’ type, king with halo standing left, wearing tailed tunic over loin cloth, holding a longbow by the middle with string outward, Garuda standard at left, Brahmi legend in right field, Kumara. Reverse: Lakshmi with halo sitting on seven-petaled lotus, holding diadem and short-stemmed lotus flower, Brahmi legend right srimahendrah. Kumar, TOTGE 2024, Class II, variety B1. Raven, KG1/group 2.

The archer type of Kumaragupta comes in several distinct types, this one with the king holding the bow turned towards him and string facing outwards.

About VF, struck with rusty dies.
