Gupta Empire, Chandragupta II, c. 380-413, AV dinar, 8.10 g. (20 mm). Obverse: ‘chhatra’ type; king with hair showing curving layers of curls wearing short loin cloth, standing left, sacrificing on a fire, attendant at right holding parasol (chhatra) over the king with left leg raised, circular Brahmi legend around. Reverse: Lakshmi, standing elegantly to right, holding long-stemmed lotus flower in her left hand, and diadem in right, with the circle tamgha to left and Brahmi legend to right, vikkramadityah. Kumar, TOTGE 2024, Class I, variety C. Raven, CG2/group 11. Some attribute this variety to Chandragupta III.
A rare type with a prominent attendant, and the circle tamgha on reverse.
VF, well-defined features, lustre shows through, attractive surfaces.
