Description

Gupta Empire, Chandragupta II, c. 380-413, AV dinar, 8.28 g. (19 mm). Archer.

Special features: elegant king wearing tunic with long tails over loin cloth, looking left. Crescent symbol between banner and king. Goddess seated on lotus, with a circle tamgha beside her and legend srivikkramah. Kumar, Class III, variety T. Raven, CG2/Group 11.

The rare variety with a crescent between king and Garuda. This type and weight is sometimes attributed to Chandragupta III, so we offer this as an alternative suggestion.

Fine-VF, good details on both sides despite wear to high points, light deposits on both sides that add pleasing contrast.

Ex Chand Collection British Museum no 4.99.64.
