Gupta Empire, Chandragupta I, c. 319-335, AV dinar, 7.84 g. (20 mm). Obverse: ‘archer’ type; king with halo standing looking left, wearing cap with frontal crest and tunic over trousers, a prominent long sash, holding an Indian longbow in left hand and an arrow in right, elaborate Garuda standard at left, Brahmi legend appears between bow and bowstring, chandra. Reverse: Lakshmi sitting on throne, holding diadem and cornucopia, Brahmi legend at right, srivikramah, tamgha left, dotted border around. Kumar, TOTGE 2024, Class I, variety B. Raven CG2/group 2.
An early Chandragupta I archer type in excellent condition. Kumar TOTGE 2024 notes approximately 138 Chandragupta archer type coins recorded, with this particular variety being much rarer.
EF, well struck with strong details, struck with rusty dies, traces of lustre show through.
