Portrait stylisé à la palette terreuse, mêlant dessin incisif et collage de papiers imprimés en hébreu, emblématique de l’esthétique onirique développée par Jean David après son installation en Israël.
Peintre et décorateur d’origine roumaine, actif dans le cercle surréaliste parisien avant-guerre, Jean David collabora avec Victor Brauner et André Breton (surrealisme). En 1942, il quitte la Roumanie à bord d’un bateau avec 12 autres Juifs, dont Theodor Brauner, le frère de Victor Brauner. Après avoir été capturé par les autorités britanniques à Chypre, il parvenu à atteindre la Palestine en 1944. Avec Marcel Janco, il fonda en Israël le village d’artistes connu sous le nom d’Ein Hod. Installé à Jérusalem en 1950, où il devient une figure marquante de la scène artistique israélienne.

A stylized portrait in an earthy palette, combining incisive drawing and collage of printed Hebrew papers, emblematic of the dreamlike aesthetic Jean David developed after settling in Israel.
A Romanian-born painter and set designer, active in the Parisian Surrealist circle before the war, Jean David collaborated with Victor Brauner and André Breton. In 1942, he left Romania aboard a boat with 12 other Jews, including Theodor Brauner, Victor Brauner’s brother. After being captured by British authorities in Cyprus, he managed to reach Palestine in 1944. Alongside Marcel Janco, he co-founded the Israeli artists’ village known as Ein Hod. Settling in Jerusalem in 1950, he became a prominent figure in the Israeli art scene.
