A pioneer of the European avant-garde, Alexandra Exter holds a prominent place in the history of 20th-century art. Active in Kyiv, Moscow, Paris, and Rome, she was one of the founding figures of Cubo-Futurism and played a key role in fostering artistic exchanges between Russia and the West.
Colored Composition, created around 1915–1916, exemplifies the artist’s most daring and experimental period. Through a dynamic interplay of geometric forms and vibrant colors, the work reflects her exploration of abstract language and her pivotal contribution to the emergence of Constructivism.
A collaborator of Fernand Léger and closely associated with Parisian avant-garde circles, Exter also made significant contributions to applied arts and theater, notably as a designer of stage sets and costumes. Her work left a lasting impact on the development of abstraction in Europe.
