Lot 362 – Ancient Egypt, female funerary figure, probably Middle Kingdom
Égypte ancienne, figurine funéraire féminine, probablement du Moyen Empire (XIIe ou XIe dynastie, env. 2000-1600 av. J.-C.) ou de la Basse Époque.
Figurine de servante ou de porte-offrandes égyptienne, représentée debout en position de portage, jambe gauche avancée. Corps peint en brun foncé et pagne court en blanc, portant un collier usekh traditionnel et une perruque noire en calotte, typique du style du Moyen Empire. Sculptée dans du bois (bois de cèdre ?).
Hauteur : 25 cm, poids : 101 g, en état correct avec des pertes de peinture significatives, trous percés dans les pieds pour le montage, mais intacte et solide.
Les modèles funéraires en bois étaient une coutume funéraire égyptienne durant tout le Moyen Empire, où des figurines et ensembles en bois étaient fabriqués pour être placés dans les tombes des personnes riches. Ces modèles en bois représentaient le travail de serviteurs, d’agriculteurs, d’autres artisans qualifiés et de soldats, nécessaire également dans l’au-delà.
Provenance: Achetée chez un antiquaire à Berne et conservée dans une collection privée à Genève depuis trois générations.
Ancient Egypt, female funerary figure, probably Middle Kingdom (12th, 11th Dynasty, c. 2000-1600 BCE) or Late Period. Egyptian servant figure or offering-bearer, standing in a carrying position, with left leg pushed forward. Body painted in dark brown and the short kilt in white, wearing traditional usekh collar and a black cap-wig that aligns with Middle Kingdom style. Carved from wood (cedar wood?).
25 cm, 101 gr., in fair condition with some significant loss of paint, holes drilled into feet for mounting, but intact and robust.
Wooden tomb models were an Egyptian funerary custom throughout the Middle Kingdom in which wooden figurines and sets were constructed to be placed in the tombs of Egyptian wealthy people. These wooden models represented the work of servants, farmers, other skilled craftsman, and soldiers that was needed also in the afterlife.
Purchased from an antique dealer in Bern and held in a private collection in Geneva for three generations.
