Ouvrage d’une rareté exceptionnelle, Reshit Khokhma est l’une des premières grammaires hébraïques rédigées dans une double visée pédagogique et communautaire par un érudit séfarade, Selomoh Jehuda Leao Templo, actif au sein de la communauté juive portugaise de Londres. Publié à Amsterdam en 1703 par Ymanuel Athias, cet ouvrage bilingue (hébreu-espagnol) témoigne des efforts entrepris par la diaspora séfarade pour préserver et transmettre le savoir linguistique et religieux hébraïque après la réintégration des Juifs en Angleterre au XVIIe siècle. À la fois clair, méthodique et accessible, ce manuel était destiné à l’enseignement dans les écoles juives telles que le Talmud Torah, incarnant le renouveau intellectuel juif en Europe occidentale.

Provenance : Collection personnelle de Rui Ribeiro Couto (écrivain, poète et diplomate brésilien). Rui Ribeiro Couto a joué un rôle dans l’aide apportée à de nombreux Juifs d’Europe pour venir au Brésil lorsqu’il était ambassadeur en Hongrie. Il possédait une très vaste bibliothèque, qui fut ensuite ramenée au Brésil par sa veuve.

A rare and highly important early Hebrew grammar composed by Selomoh Jehuda Leao Templo, a distinguished Sephardic scholar and educator active in the Portuguese-Jewish community of London. Reshit Khokhma (“Beginning of Wisdom”) was designed as a pedagogical tool for the Talmud Torah school, reflecting both a deep commitment to the preservation of Hebrew language and a broader effort to revitalize Jewish education in post-expulsion England.
Though printed in Amsterdam by Ymanuel Athias in 1703, the grammar’s roots lie in Leao Templo’s work in London shortly after the readmission of Jews to England under Oliver Cromwell. Written in parallel Hebrew and Spanish, the text offers a brief, clear, and accessible method of teaching Hebrew grammar—embodying the educational ideals of the Sephardic diaspora during the early modern period.
This edition stands out not only for its rarity, but also for its place at the intersection of Jewish intellectual revival, linguistic instruction, and diasporic identity formation in Western Europe.

Provenance: From the personal library of Rui Ribeiro Couto, the renowned Brazilian writer, poet, and diplomat. As Brazil’s ambassador to Hungary during a critical historical moment, Ribeiro Couto was involved in humanitarian efforts aiding Jewish refugees during WWII. His personal collection—distinguished by its richness and rarity—was preserved and returned to Brazil by his widow.
