Description
Gupta Empire, Samudragupta, c. 335-375, AV dinar, 7.71 g. (20 mm). Obverse: ‘javelin’ type; king wearing royal tunic standing, holding javelin and sacrificing at altar, with garuda standard in left field, Brahmi inscription Samudra below his left arm, circular Brahmi legend around. Reverse: goddess Lakshmi enthroned, holding diadem and cornucopia, Brahmi inscription at right, tamgha left, dotted border around. VF with underlying lustre, some flatness of the strike on both faces.Probably a later type in which the king’s appearance has acquired a more Indian look, with a large earring and an ornate dress with beads.Ex Chand Collection 7.4.04 Catalogue
