Description
Gupta Empire, Samudragupta, c. 335-375, AV dinar, 7.45 g. (22 mm). Obverse: ‘javelin’ type; king standing left, sacrificing at altar, holding javelin, Garuda standard at left, Brahmi legend around and Samudra below left arm. Reverse: Lakshmi enthroned facing, resting feet at lotus, holding diadem and cornucopia, Brahmi legend at right, dotted border around. VF-EF, struck from a worn die, some lustre shows through.This type was likely one of the first Gupta coin produced, and clearly modelled on the Kushan coins that went before it.Ex Chand Collection 1.09.13 Catalogue
