Gupta Empire, Chandragupta I, c. 319-335, AV dinar, 7.29 g. (21 mm). Obverse: ‘king and queen’ type; king standing at right, queen at left, facing each other, king holding up right hand, Brahmi legend at left Kumaradevi in straight line, Brahmi legend right Chandra (gupta). Reverse: goddess enthroned facing, with back of the throne absent, seated on lion facing right, holding diadem and cornucopia, tamgha to left, Brahmi inscription at right, dotted border around. Kumar TOTGE 2024, Class II, variety B.
Fine-VF, possible light edge mount at 12 o’clock.
This ‘king and ‘queen’ type is a variation of the preceding lot, with the Brahmi inscription Sri Kumaradevi (the name of the queen) in a straight line, and not the usual curved inscription.
