Sasanian Kingdom, Shahpur I, c. 240-272, AV dinar, 7.35 g. (23 mm), Ctesiphon mint, phase 1a, c. 240-244. Obverse: bust of King Shahpur right, wearing diadem and mural crown with korymbos and ribbons; triple pellets above crown. Legend in Pahlavi/ Middle Persian around. Reverse: fire altar; flanked by two attendants wearing mural crowns; one or two pellets to right of altar shaft, Pahlavi inscription left and right. A very rare type.
EF and lustrous, some die rust and light tooling on the king’s cheek.
