Description
RELIQUAIRE KOTA-NDASSA (mbulu ngulu), GABON. Bois, laiton, cuivre, clous, statue probablement décorative. Hauteur : 49,5 cm. Selon la classification stylistique établie par Louis Perrois, à propos des statues-reliquaires Kota dans Arts du Gabon, Arnouville, 1979, cette pièce peut être rattachée au type IV, dont les caractéristiques importantes sont « l’absence de crête sommitale en forme de croissant, les amples coiffes latérales incurvées à volutes terminales obliques ou en pendule, et les oreilles stylisées ». A cela s’ajoute un visage ovale concave-convexe au front débordant [avec] une crête médiane ». Selon l’auteur, cette typologie peut être rattachée à l’art tribal des Kota du Sud. KOTA-NDASSA RELIQUARY (mbulu ngulu), GABON. Wood, brass, copper, nails, probably decorative statue. Height: 49.5 cm. According to the stylistic classification established by Louis Perrois for Kota reliquary statues in Arts du Gabon, Arnouville, 1979, this piece can be assigned to type IV, whose important characteristics are “the absence of a crescent-shaped summit crest, the ample curved lateral headdresses with oblique or pendulum-shaped terminal volutes, and the stylized ears”. Added to this is a concave-convex oval face with a protruding forehead [with] a median crest”. According to the author, this typology can be linked to Southern Kota tribal art.
