Celtic Britain, Iceni Tribe, uninscribed, c. 45-40 BC, AV stater, 5.31 g. (17 mm), Freckenham type. Obverse: Back-to-back crescents, pellets around. Reverse: stylised horse right, star below, pellet-in-circle above.
Fine and very well struck for this type. A very attractive example in rose coloured gold.
The Iceni were an alliance of Celtic tribes in East Anglia in what today is Norfolk and North Suffolk. In 1885 nearly 100 gold stater similar to this example were found in a earthenware pot in a garden at Freckenham, Suffolk. I t is thought that they were produced soon after Julius Caesar’s first Roman invasion
