Description
A marvellous left mint sheet marginal block of four

1840 1d Black, Plate 7 (BA–CB), left mint sheet marginal block of four, printed on experimental thin paper. The stamps display a fresh, rich colour and a fine, sharp impression, clearly showing the constant variety “CA with double C.” The left margin retains the distinct sheet watermark guide lines, adding further desirability and positional interest.

Preserved in mint condition with original gum, the lower pair remains never hinged, while only light hinge traces are present on the upper stamps. Overall condition is exceptional for a multiple of this rarity.

A magnificent and extremely rare block, seldom encountered in such outstanding quality.

Expertise: Accompanied by a British Philatelic Association Certificate (2025).

Provenance: Earl of Crawford and “a well known fellow of the RPS” Robson Lowe auction (7 May 1958).
