Lot 50336 – 1840 2d blue pl.2 OA-OL, maximum horizontal strip of twelve tied by black Maltese Cross cancellations on wrapper
1840 2d blue pl.2 OA-OL, maximum horizontal strip of twelve, cut into in places and showing portions of nine adjoining stamps at top, some creasing and other faults, tied by black Maltese Cross cancellations on wrapper (smaller part of reverse missing) from South Shields (JA 26 1842 backstamp) to London. Faults to be expected from such large wrapper with heavy contents. A remarkable and very important cover representing the largest known multiple of the 2 pence used on cover and unique from plate 2. A similar strip of twelve on cover (but plate 1) was part of the famous Chartwell collection (part I, lot 1182) which sold for £42’000.
Expertise: Certificate BPA (2012).
